Carousel Slideshow (formerly known as All Visual Boston) put on its fourth slideshow this past Thursday night at Spontaneous Celebrations in Jamaica Plain. Trevor Powers organized the first slideshow a few years ago as a spinoff of All Visual LA and when he moved to Texas, Aviary Gallery decided to carry on the tradition. Different from a traditional photo exhibition, Carousel is a one night event that brings artists together, not only to take in some stunning photography, but also to network and discover new artistic connections. Since Carousel is digitally projected, the featured artists don’t need to pay to print or frame their work, a welcome reprieve from the expenses of displaying artwork. It also offers a chance for artists to show work that might be so new it hasn’t yet found its way into print form.

Lasting around forty minutes, featuring the work of 31 emerging photographers, and paired with the atmospheric sounds of musical group TOOMS, Carousel is quite the show. Because of the ephemeral nature of the slideshow, the audience’s attention is actively focused on absorbing each image before it fades from view. The Aviary Gallery curates the slideshow with the help of a rotating guest curator. This summer’s show benefitted from strong curation that linked together diverse works, from abstract explorations of design to formally structured environments to narrative fragments.

The photos covered a wide range of subject matter, but were universally polished and fresh, an exciting glimpse into dozens of photo projects. In exchange for a donation viewers were able to walk away with a zine featuring some of the photos from the slideshow and most importantly a list of all the participating photographers and their websites so viewers could dive into further exploring all the featured photographs even after the slideshow itself had ended.

The slideshow is always a fun and exciting event that brings together photographers, artists, and art-enjoyers from around the city. I look forward to seeing you all at Carousel V!
